Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer yesterday signed legislation to ensure funding is in place to support and maintain adequate and functional signage and warning devices at grade crossings.
House Bill 4252 splits the costs of grade crossing sign upkeep and maintenance between railroad and road authorities, preventing any additional costs from being passed on to motorists, state officials said in a press release.
Under the new law, the Michigan Department of Transportation must complete a study to determine traffic control device maintenance costs. The department must also update the fees road authorities pay railroads annually for the maintenance of active warning devices at crossings.
The bipartisan bill "further enhances road safety by putting up and maintaining adequate, functional signage at railroad crossings," Whitmer said.
