Metro Transit recently replaced the 20-year-old tunnel trespass detection system at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport with new equipment and other features.
The new system is similar to the old one, but includes new sensors to detect movements near the underground Lindbergh Station and red flashing signals to alert operators at tunnel entrances, Metro Transit officials said last week in a blog post. When movements are detected, trains are stopped to allow transit police to clear the tunnel.
Crews expected to finish the upgrade in January, but discovered a need for extensive rewiring, delaying the project several months. While the rewiring was conducted, they continued to maintain communications equipment along the Blue and Green lines. The new system will require less maintenance.
"We periodically had to align the photocells to make sure they were providing the infrared beam for the security system," said Jereld Hanson, SCADA communications supervisor. "That’s all automated now. It frees up a lot of time."
