The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has approved several projects to improve rail safety at 10 grade crossings on the Iowa Interstate Railroad line in the Peoria area.
New automatic flashing light signals and gate installations will be installed at six crossings in Marshall County and four in Peoria County, according to an ICC press release.
The total cost for the projects is $3.2 million. The state's Grade Crossing Protection Fund will be used to pay 95% of the cost, with Iowa Interstate Railroad responsible for the remainder of the installation cost as well as future maintenance of the signals and circuitry.
The projects are to be completed in about 18 months.
