Transpo installs crossing system for Nebraska short line

Transpo Industries Inc. recently installed its BODAN® grade crossing system at a crossing near Norfolk, Neb. — the supplier’s first installation in the Cornhusker State.

The precast reinforced polymer concrete system features a bridge design to transfer vehicle axle loads directly to bridge rails. The modular system — which doesn’t require railroad ties for support — is designed to withstand loads exceeding 44,000 pounds and includes optional built-in flashing warning lights to eliminate the need for quad gates.

The Nebraska Department of Roads and Northeastern Nebraska Railway Co. sought to improve the crossing, which failed four times since 1990. The parties plan to obtain a second BODAN and install the system at a crossing in spring 2006.
