UP, Grand Prairie install Texas' first crossing camera system

Union Pacific Railroad and the city of Grand Prairie, Texas, recently unveiled a photo enforcement system installed at a grade crossing — the states’ first crossing camera system.

Manufactured by Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., the system captures photos of motorists and other crossing activity that law enforcement agencies can use to enforce crossing laws. During the past four years, train/motorist accidents at Grand Prairie’s 11 crossings caused five fatalities.

UP and the city plan to install photo enforcement systems at five other crossings.
