GO Transit recently awarded a $201.8 million contract to Siemens Transportation Systems to upgrade the signaling and communication systems in and around Toronto’s Union Station — the supplier’s largest-ever rail automation contract in North America.

Siemens will upgrade the mechanical interlockings with type Sicas ECC electronic interlockings. Once work is complete in 2008, the system will control 250 switches and 170 interlockings, making Toronto's facility the largest North American station to be equipped with electronic interlockings, according to Siemens. The work will cover a 3.6-mile section, which includes about 25 miles of track.

Siemens also will equip the traffic control center with a new operations control system, which will monitor and operate interlockings, as well as provide automatic train tracking, timetable management and automatic route setting.
