Alcatel recently obtained a multi-million-dollar contract from Swedish railway builder Botniabanan AB to design and install an integrated communication system for a new rail line.

Located in northeastern Sweden, the Bothnia Line is designed to provide better links to towns along the Gulf of Bothnia. Scheduled to be complete in 2010, the 118-mile line will include 140 bridges and 15 tunnels.

Alcatel will deliver, integrate, install, test and commission an integrated railway communication system along 80 track miles, including 15.5 miles of tunnels. The company’s solution includes tunnel radio, optical and copper cable, power supply and telephony systems. Alcatel also will install third-party radio links, and synchronus digital hierarchy and GSM-R systems.
