BART to consider draft cell phone interruption policy
advertisement
Next week, Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) board plans to consider a draft of a policy that would govern the circumstances under which the agency could interrupt riders’ cell phone service.
Earlier this year, BART officials caused a controversy when they temporarily blocked riders’ cell phone service in order to stop what officials believed to be an attempt by protestors to interrupt train service. The protestors allegedly planned to use their cell phones to coordinate the protest.
Those opposed to the agency’s cell-phone-blocking action said it violated citizens’ free-speech rights. Agency officials said at the time that they acted out of concern for riders’ safety.
The draft policy to be considered by the board incorporates suggestions and comments from the American Civil Liberties Union and BART’s Citizen Review Board, BART officials said in a prepared statement.
