advertisement
Last year, BNSF Railway Co. surpassed its grade crossing closure goal of 450 by eliminating 453 crossings. At year's end, the Class I also marked the 3,789th closure since BNSF launched a crossing closure program in 2000.
Now, the railroad is targeting a closure goal in the low to mid-400s for 2008 after last year's goal went up from 2006's 420 to 450.
The railroad's public projects team works with communities to close public crossings, which account for about 30 percent of all closures. Later this year, the team expects to mark a milestone — the 4,000th closure since 2000.
