BNSF Railway Co. recently contracted Saft to supply low-maintenance nickel-cadmium batteries for grade crossing equipment.
Produced from electrode-active materials encased in rugged perforated steel pockets, the batteries feature a fiber mat separator between the electrodes to allow gasses generated during charging to recombine into water. The batteries are designed to minimize maintenance, extend watering periods and lower life-cycle costs compared with other battery types.
“When dealing with applications that affect public safety, like grade crossings and signaling, battery quality and reliability are extremely important,” said Carl Wikse, Saft’s director of North American railway sales, in a prepared statement.
