CMI-Promex Inc. and GE-Plastics recently developed a plastic signal housing as an alternative to cast-metal housings that can rust or corrode. CMI-Promex plans to offer ProLite signals featuring the plastic housing and light-emitting diodes (LED).
CMI-Promex initially produced switch position indicators using five-inch LED modules. Now, the company will offer a larger plastic housing and eight-inch LEDs for freight-rail applications and a multiple-lamp stackable design for transit-rail systems.
“We felt that simply using longer-lasting LEDs would not solve the problem of frequent signal maintenance because the metal housing was still subject to degradation,” said CMI-Promex President Wayne Ligato in a prepared statement. “We decided to design a plastic housing that, combined with LEDs, would make these signals maintenance-free for a decade or more.”
The plastic housings will be produced from GE’s Lexan® EXL 9330 polycarbonate-siloxane copolymer sheet and resin, which is designed to withstand flying debris from tracks and cold temperatures, and resist corrosion.
CMI-Promex also supplies movable bridge, expansion and compromise joints.
