Today, Canadian National Railway Co. and Safe Kids Canada are launching Safe Crossing Week 2008, a week-long national educational campaign aimed at promoting grade crossing and rail safety to Canadian children.
About 90 fatalities occur each year in Canada from incidents involving trains. This year, thousands of students in more than 600 elementary schools will learn about rail and crossing safety in their classrooms from Oct. 20-26.
“Teaching rail safety to children at a young age is vital … not only in rural areas, but also in our cities, especially as urban areas expand and houses are built in more areas near train tracks,” CN and Safe Kids Canada officials said in a prepared statement.
CN and Safe Kids Canada also will call on parents to talk to their children about crossing safety and safe behavior around trains and tracks.
