CN installs wireless chassis tracking system at Brampton terminal

Bell Canada recently installed a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) asset tracking system at Canadian National Railway Co.’s Brampton, Ontario, intermodal terminal.

The wireless system is designed to manage incoming and outgoing truck chassis, monitor chassis location and automatically record equipment identification numbers at terminal entry/exit gates. Previously, CN workers recorded chassis I.D. numbers manually.

“Since the implementation, we have experienced near-perfect read rates with readers and tags, which has resulted in increased efficiency of our chassis fleet, improved productivity and cost savings,” said Remy Benmiloud, CN manager of intermodal excellence (IMX), in a prepared statement.

CN officials are considering whether to install RFID systems at other Canadian terminals.
