CTA implements Wi-Fi network to automate 10 yards

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is automating rail-car maintenance procedures. Last year, the authority implemented a Wi-Fi mesh network in 10 of its rail yards.

Deployed by System Development Integration Inc. and Tropos Networks, the system enables CTA yard maintenance inspectors to input data using handheld computers, providing managers real-time maintenance information and easier access to defect data.

The wireless system is based on Tropos’ MetroMesh solution, which features high-power radios and a predictive wireless routing protocol designed to provide high throughput.
