Rail News: Communication and Signal

CTA to upgrade track, signals on Loop

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) crews soon will begin replacing signal and train-control systems, and rail and ties on the Loop elevated tracks.

The authority plans to replace a more than 30-year-old train-control system with one that will enable CTA to operate more efficiently through two junctions where trains from five rail lines enter and exit the loop. In addition, crews will replace about 10,000 feet of track and ties to help eliminate about 600 feet of slow zones, and upgrade a portion of the control system that operates the Lake and Wells Street bridges.

The project is scheduled for completion in 2009.
