The Canadian government and province of Manitoba recently announced plans to provide $50 million for a grade separation project near Portage La Prairie.

The project calls for upgrading a traffic signal-controlled intersection of the TransCanada and Yellowhead highways to a grade-separated interchange, and grade separating a crossing on a nearby Canadian National Railway Co. mainline. The federal government will provide $21 million and provincial government, $29 million.

The highways and mainline are two of Canada's three primary east-west transportation corridors — the other is Canadian Pacific Railway's mainline. The project will facilitate truck and rail movements to container yards in Winnipeg and other regional intermodal facilities, and improve access to border crossings, eastern Canada markets, and ports in Vancouver and Prince Rupert, federal and provincial government officials said.
