Dutch railway to test broadband connection onboard trains
advertisement
Internet technology company Nomad Digital recently teamed up with four Dutch firms to introduce a two-way wireless broadband connection onboard trains in the Netherlands.
The United Kingdom-based Nomad signed a deal with mobile and fixed line operator KPN, train operating company Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), television firm RTL, and television and narrow-casting company Heuvelman to install and operate the technology on a train running between Haarlem, Masstrich and Heerlen in the southern portion of the country.
The system will transmit travel information and news to the train, where it will be displayed on double-sided screens in each car. The information will be updated using Nomad’s wireless WiMAX system, which features fidelity access points that will be installed in the train and along the route.
The system also will enable passengers to access the Internet via laptops or personal digital assistants, and train operators to record data and obtain operating information.
