GE - Transportation Global Signaling recently won a $60 million contract from Brazilian mining firm Vale to overhaul a signaling and communication system along more than 370 miles of double track and in a rail yard.
The contract represents GE's largest rail signaling project in South America, the company said.
GE will upgrade relay-based equipment that's up to 30 years old. The company will install its ElectroLogIXS signaling platform, which is designed to provide control of power switch machines and signal lamp lighting; Electrocode track circuits; and Cab-X cab signaling components.
To be completed by 2010, the modernization will increase the capacity of Vale's rail network by 23 percent, GE said.
