Rail News: Communication and Signal
GO Transit recently awarded a $292.7 million contract to Siemens Canada Ltd. to design, supply, install and commission a new train-control signal system for Toronto’s Union Station. The contract is the largest GO Transit has ever awarded, according to the agency.
The new signal system will replace one that’s been in operation since the 1920s. The system will enable GO Transit to operate more trains through the station, improve reliability and communications, and provide more train scheduling flexibility.
The Government of Canada will provide $94.2 million for the project; the province of Ontario will fund the remainder. The project is part of the GO Transit Rail Improvement Program, a billion-dollar expansion program funded through the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund.
Siemens will begin design work next month. GO Transit expects the new signal system to be up and running by 2014.
