ICC approves grade-crossing projects across Illinois

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) recently approved several grade-crossing improvement projects across the state.

According to ICC press releases, the projects involve grade crossings along the Illinois Central Railroad, BNSF Railway Co. and CSX lines.

The projects entail:
• replacing outdated crossing warning devices at two Illinois Central Railroad grade crossings along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Decatur. The total cost to design and install the automatic flashing light signals and crossing gates is $474,624 and $509,097 at the respective crossings;
• i
nstalling new automated warning devices and grade improvements at the County Road 1550 North grade crossing of Illinois Central Railroad Co.'s track near Tuscola. Cost of the signal design and installation is $375,452;
• installing new automated warning devices at the South 32nd Street grade crossing
of Illinois Central Railroad’s track in Mattoon.The total estimated cost of the signal design and installation is $375,469;
• i
nstalling  new automated warning devices and gates at multiple Knox County grade crossings. Safety improvements will be made to the County Road 2800 North crossing of BNSF Railway Co.'s track near Rio and the County Road 2200 North  and the County Highway 35 crossings of BNSF’s track near Henderson. The cost of the signal design and construction near Rio is $429,746. The total estimated cost of the signal design and installation at both crossings near Henderson is $976,248; and
• i
nstalling new automated warning devices at multiple Fayette County roads that intersect CSX tracks. The upgraded grade crossings will include County Road 2000 East near St. Elmo; County Road 1950 East and County Road 1900 East near Brownstown; County Road 1700 East; County Road 950 East near Vandalia; and at County Road 300 East near Hagerstown. The cost to design and install the automatic flashing light signals and crossing gates is $3,468,140.
