The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) recently approved plans for four grade crossing upgrade projects slated for completion in January 2009. The commission will cover the majority of project costs through the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF).

The ICC will provide $222,000 to upgrade a Norfolk Southern Railway crossing in Wayne City. The project calls for installing automatic flashing light signals and gates, and reconstructing the south highway approach grade.

The commission also will provide $175,000 to upgrade an NS crossing near Union Hill. The project includes new automatic flashing light signals and gates, and the reconstruction of an existing crossing surface.

The ICC will help fund a third NS project, as well. The commission will provide $155,000 to upgrade a crossing near Raymond. The project calls for installing automatic flashing light signals and gates, and reconstructing the west highway approach grade.

Finally, the ICC will provide $128,000 to upgrade a Canadian National Railway Co./Illinois Central Railroad crossing in Thomasboro. The project includes new automatic flashing light signals and gates. The village of Thomasboro will cover the cost to improve highway approach grades.

Funded by motor fuel taxes designated for rail safety improvements, the GCPF provides $27 million annually for crossing upgrades and the construction or reconstruction of grade separations.
