The Illinois Commerce Commission this week announced it approved three grade crossing safety improvement projects in Randolph and Logan counties.

In Randolph County, Illinois Central Railroad Co. (IC) will install new automatic warning devices at the North 4th Street crossing in Coulterville and a crossing in Sparta, commission officials said in a press release. The total combined cost for the projects is $950,740, with state funds covering $903,203. The railroad will be responsible for the remaining costs and future maintenance expenses.

The railroad will also rehabilitate the existing highway approaches at the Coulterville crossing, which is fully funded by the state at $134,844. The village of Coulterville will be responsible for any future maintenance costs.

All work in Randolph County is expected to be completed in 18 months.

In Logan County, IC will install new automatic warning devices at the Chapel Road/700th Street crossing. The project will cost $336,188 to complete, with state funds covering $319,379. The railroad will be responsible for the remaining costs and future maintenance expenses.

That project also is expected to be completed in 18 months.
