advertisement
Yesterday, the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) approved plans for a $4 million pedestrian underpass under Union Pacific Railroad tracks in Winfield.
The commission will provide $852,000 for the project through the Grade Crossing Protection Fund, which is funded by motor fuel taxes designated for rail improvements.
To be completed by June 2010, the underpass will provide safer access for a commuter station and schools located south of the tracks, the ICC said. After the underpass is completed, an existing pedestrian grade crossing will be closed.
Various federal and state grants will contribute $1.6 million for the project, and the village will provide $1.5 million.
