The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has authorized $2 million from the state's Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) for removal and reconstruction of the existing Muirhead Road grade separation structure near Elgin.

The Plato Township Road District will remove the existing structure and construct a new five-span vehicular overpass superstructure consisting of reinforced concrete deck slabs and rolled steel beams to carry Muirhead Road over the Chicago Central & Pacific Railroad Co.’s track. The railroad is owned by CN.

ICC staff recommended that the GCPF be used to pay 60% of the project's $3.7 million cost, or about $2.2 million. The work must be completed by Dec. 31, 2025.

The ICC also approved the installation of automatic warning devices at the County Road 2450 East grade crossing near Kewanee. The crossing is on a BNSF Railway Co. line.

The estimated cost for the new warning devices is $397,780. ICC staff recommended that the GCPF be used to pay 95% of the signal design and installation costs. BNSF will cover all remaining costs and future operating and maintenance expenses related to the new devices and temporary STOP signs. The work must be completed within 18 months of the notice to proceed.
