The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) last week approved a project to improve a grade crossing in St. Clair County.
The project calls for new automatic warning devices and highway approach improvements at the West Lyons Street crossing in Marissa, ICC officials said in a press release.
Signal design and installation will cost $439,695. ICC staff recommends the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) be used to pay 95%, with the CN-owned Illinois Central Railroad responsible for the remaining 5%. The cost of the highway approach rehabilitation is $174,076 — 100% of which will be covered by the GCPF.
The project is slated to be completed in about 18 months.
"Projects like the one in St. Clair County are an important investment that help keep our communities safe," said ICC Commissioner Michael Carrigan.
