The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has granted approval for upgrades to six grade crossings in Kankakee County and two crossings in Piatt County.
In Kankakee County, the public safety improvements include the installation of new automatic flashing lights, signals and gates at four Norfolk Southern Railway track locations, according to an ICC press release.
The combined total cost for the new automatic warning devices at all six crossings is $2.2 million. The Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) will pay 95% of the signal design and installation costs, not to exceed $2,101,310. NS will pay remaining signal design and installation costs, and all future operating and maintenance costs related to the new automatic warning devices.
The ICC also approved an agreement to install new automatic flashing lights with vehicular and pedestrian gates at the Piatt Street and the Sangamon Street crossings in Bement, Piatt County. The combined total cost for the new automatic warning devices at both crossings is $963,662.
The GCPF will pay 95% of the signal design and installation costs, not to exceed $915,479. NS will pay remaining design and installation costs, and all future operating and maintenance costs related to the automatic warning devices.
All work is to be completed within 18 months.
