KCSR teams up with Louisiana DOT to upgrade 300 crossings

The Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) and Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) recently signed an agreement to improve safety at 300 public grade crossings.

During the next five years, KCSR will provide up to $5 million and DOTD, up to $11.6 million to upgrade warning devices, renew crossbucks and close crossings.

After improvements are completed, about half of the project area’s non-gated crossings will feature warning devices, including crossbucks, flashers and/or gates. Other crossings will be equipped with crossbucks and a yield or stop sign.

“By combining available state and federal resources with railroad resources, we are making important strides toward enhancing safety throughout the state,” said Bill Shrewsberry, DOTD highway rail safety engineer, in a prepared statement.
