The Kansas City Southern Railway Co. (KCSR) recently closed six grade crossings in Newton, Miss., in conjunction with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT). As part of a five-year corridor project agreement with MDOT, the railroad will add flashing lights and gates to four other Newton crossings.

Now in its third year, the $10 million project calls for closing 16 crossings, upgrading others with signals and gates, and improving crossing surfaces; so far, KCSR and MDOT have closed eight crossings.

“This project is significant because it allows us to accomplish in five years what could otherwise take 30 years,” said KCSR Director of Public Safety Allen Pepper in a prepared statement.
