Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday announced the state will provide more than $2.2 million in grants to improve 17 grade crossings in 11 counties.
The projects include upgrades to crossing signals and lights, the replacement of or new pavement for approaches and full crossing replacements.
“Railroads are an essential part of Kentucky’s transportation system, reaching every corner of the commonwealth,” Beshear said in a press release. “The projects will result in greater safety for the millions of vehicles that cross railroad tracks and more efficient operation of the crossings themselves.”
Grant applications were submitted and approved by Norfolk Southern Railway, Paducah and Louisville Railway Co. (PAL), R. J. Corman Railroad Group and the Kentucky Railway Museum. Each grantee will provide a minimum 20% project funding match.
PAL will receive grants for 10 crossing projects, including a $284,240 grant for a full crossing replacement and signal upgrade at Nelson Road and KY 1379 in Muhlenberg County, and three separate $189,727 grants for signal and light upgrade projects in Caldwell and Jefferson counties.
Meanwhile, R. J. Corman will receive grants for three full crossing replacements in Bullitt, Fayette and Nelson counties, while NS will receive one $62,692 grant to replace a crossing approach at U.S. 25 and Dixie Highway in Boone County. The railway museum will receive grants for three full crossing replacements in LaRue and Nelson counties.
