The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has signed a $223.3 million contract with RailWorks Corp. subsidiary L.K. Comstock & Co. Inc. to upgrade the existing signaling system and install a communications-based train control (CBTC) system on the Queens Boulevard subway line.Work will begin this month and is expected to wrap up in fall 2021, RailWorks officials said in a press release. L.K. Comstock will install signal, communications, fiber-optic and CBTC systems on the four-track line beginning in Jamaica, Queens, and extending under Queens Boulevard on Manhattan's west side.Subsidiary RailWorks Transit will serve as subcontractor to perform related track and civil work.Additional work includes building new signal rooms, modifying existing facilities and upgrading systems to ensure connectivity with the CBTC system, RailWorks officials said. The project also calls for constructing and extending the fiber backbone support to perform health and system tests on the CBTC-equipped rail stock in all the ancillary yards and facilities that support the Queens Boulevard line.Siemens and Thales in July 2015 were tapped to provide the design and CBTC equipment for the system.L.K. Comstock previously was contracted to install CBTC technology on MTA New York City Transit's Flushing and Canarsie lines.
