MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) awarded a $245.8 million contract to L.K. Comstock & Co. to install communications-based train control (CBTC) signaling on the Eighth Avenue ACE line.

The CBTC system will replace the current fixed-block train control system to enable NYCT to more precisely detect train location, allowing more trains per hour to operate, NYCT officials said in a press release.

The system also will enable NYCT to program work zones so trains cannot exceed set speeds in a certain area, and provide real-time train arrival information for riders.

The constract's scope calls for the complete installation of the new signaling system from south of the 59th Street Interlocking in Manhattan, to the High Street Station in Brooklyn, as well as two interlockings at 30th and 42nd streets in Manhattan; power supply, zone controllers, cables, fire suppression, HVAC, lighting, and construction of facilities to house infrastructure such as relays and power.

As part of the contract, Siemens Mobility Inc. will provide the CBTC system and equipment.

Construction will begin as early as the end of 2020, NYCT officials said.

The Eighth Avenue corridor connects Manhattan’s West Side with Brooklyn and serves some of the system’s busiest stations, including Columbus Circle, Times Square and Penn stations.
