The China Ministry of Railways (MOR) recently reached an agreement with Nortel to provide additional GSM Railway (GSM-R) switching centers for digital mobile signaling and voice and data communications systems.

Nortel will provide seven GSM-R switching centers, which will serve existing passenger-rail and future high-speed rail lines. The supplier installed two switching centers for MOR last year. The GSM-R features a circuit and packet switching platform, and a rail-customized base transceiver station.

The ministry plans to provide digital mobile voice and data communications for locomotive engineers, signaling personnel and other operations staff.
