North Carolina DOT adds safety devices at eight crossings

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Rail Division recently completed improvements at eight grade crossings.

Costing more than $2.1 million, the work included the installation of signals and gates at Norfolk Southern Railway crossings in or near Black Mountain, Marion, LaGrange and Kernersville; a Chesapeake & Albemarle Railroad crossing in Belcross; a North Carolina & Virginia Railroad crossing in Kelford; and an Alexander Railroad Co. crossing in Stony Point.

Most of the projects were funded 90 percent with federal dollars and 10 percent with state monies; others were funded by an 80 percent federal and 20 percent state monetary split.

The projects are a part of a statewide program aimed at enhancing highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public crossings. NCDOT now has installed automatic warning devices at more than 2,400 of the state’s 4,100 public crossings.
