North Carolina DOT bolsters safety at four public crossings
advertisement
The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Rail Division recently added safety equipment at four public grade crossings.
The division installed crossing signals and gates at a CSX Transportation crossing near Fayetteville; two Norfolk Southern Railway crossings in New London and Morehead City; and an Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railroad crossing in Mt. Gilead.
The work cost about $730,000 total, with federal funds covering 90 percent and state dollars, 10 percent. Maintenance funding for the crossings will be divided equally between the state and railroads.
The projects are part of a NCDOT program designed to enhance safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public crossings. Automatic warning devices now are installed at more than 2,400 of the state’s 4,100 public crossings.
