North Carolina DOT pursues more crossing closures

On Sept. 22, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) plans to hold a public workshop to review a traffic separation study that analyzes the potential closure of several grade crossings in Goldsboro.
NCDOT proposes to close an existing Norfolk Southern Railway crossing at West Birkhead Street because a Lanier Avenue crossing can provide alternate access. In addition the department’s rail division is performing a traffic separation study on 12 other crossings.
The study will recommend proposed closures, ways to upgrade safety equipment at certain crossings and other crossing improvements. Preliminary recommendations include the potential closure of crossings at Mulberry, Virginia, Bryant, Bain and Lionel streets.
Closures are part of NCDOT’s effort to reduce the number of redundant and/or high-accident crossings statewide. Since 1993, NCDOT has closed more than 170 public rail crossings.
Today, one more crossing will be added to the list. NCDOT expects to permanently close a Short Street crossing in Bethel. The crossing is humped, has limited space for vehicles and is located near other crossings, NCDOT officials said in a prepared statement.
