The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission directing Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX Transportation to install modernized lights and gates with upgraded warning device circuitry at an interconnected NS and CSXT grade crossing in Columbus.

The railroads will be responsible for completing work by August 28, 2013. Federal sources will provide funding for the upgrades.

Meanwhile, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission approved the allocation of $25,000 from the Grade Crossing Protective Fund to pay a portion of improvements to a BNSF Railway Co. crossing in Pasco, Wash.

The city plans to install median barriers at a public crossing on West A Street, and a raised traffic curb with traffic bumpers on South First Avenue, which runs parallel to the tracks that intersect with A Street.

The $66,000 project must be completed by June 30, 2013. The city will provide $41,000 for the work.
