The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) yesterday approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) directing Cleveland Commercial Railroad to complete safety improvements at a grade crossing in Cleveland.
The railroad will upgrade active warning devices at the East 116th Street crossing. Work is scheduled to be completed by April 12, 2018. Federal funding for the project will be provided through the ORDC.
PUCO also approved a request from Norfolk Southern Railway to relocate existing warning devices at the Wilkins Road/County Road 108 crossing in Lucas County to accommodate a track expansion project. The railroad should complete the work no later than Oct. 12, commission officials said in a press release.
PUCO is responsible for evaluating the state's public crossings to determine the need for installing active warning devices. Since the commission assumed oversight of crossing safety, the number of yearly train-motor vehicle accidents in Ohio has dropped from 123 in 2001 to 64 in 2016.
