Ohio commission approves NS crossing upgrade

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) recently approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission authorizing Norfolk Southern Railway to install flashing lights and gates at a grade crossing in West Chester Township.

The railroad will be responsible for completing the work by Feb. 9, 2013. Funding will be covered by federal dollars.

PUCO is responsible for evaluating the state’s public crossings to determine the need for installing active warning devices to boost safety. Over the past decade, the annual number of train-motor vehicle crashes has decreased from 123 in 2001 to 64 in 2011, according to the commission.
