Ohio utilities commission OKs crossing upgrades; New York DOT schedules hearing on proposed public crossing

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) recently authorized the installation of flashing lights and gates at five grade crossings.
CSX Transportation will upgrade the Township Road 33 and Township Road 115 crossings in Logan County, and Holland Road crossing in Cuyahoga County. Norfolk Southern Railway will upgrade the Township Road 26/Orr Road crossing in Crawford County and County Road 24 crossing in Seneca County.
The railroads will be responsible for completing four of the upgrades by March 13, 2013; CSXT will be responsible for completing construction at the Cuyahoga County crossing by June 13, 2013.
Funding for four of the upgrades will be covered by federal dollars. Funding for the Cuyahoga County crossing will be shared by PUCO, CSXT, the Ohio Rail Development Commission and city of Brook Park.
Meanwhile, the New York State Department of Transportation plans to hold a public hearing June 20 regarding a request by the City of New York to establish a public grade crossing on a CSXT line near the Bronx Kill, a narrow waterway connecting the Harlem and East rivers. The crossing would run between Bronx County and Randall's Island in New York City.
The city is constructing the Randall's Island Connector, which will provide pedestrians and bicyclists access between the South Bronx and about 400 acres of recreational space on Randall's Island. As part of the project, the city is proposing the construction of a public grade crossing.
