The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) directing the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co. (W&LE) to install flashing lights and gates at 14 grade crossings in Canton.

The crossings are located at 2nd Street, both NE and SE; 3rd Street, both NE and SE; 4th Street, both NE and SE; 5th Street NE; 6th Street NE; 7th Street NE; 8th Street NE; 12th Street NE; Cleveland Avenue SE; Madison Street SE; and Tuscarawas Street.

W&LE must complete construction by Feb. 17, 2014. Funding for the upgrades will be covered by federal dollars.

Meanwhile, the village of Ottawa, Ohio, is considering a proposal to close a CSX Transportation crossing on Road L-10. The ORDC approached the village about closing the crossing because of safety concerns. Village officials discussed the proposal at an Aug. 13 meeting and are expected to vote on it at their next meeting.
