Yesterday, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) announced it approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission directing three railroads to install flashing lights and gates at seven grade crossings.

Norfolk Southern Railway will upgrade two crossings in Ashtabula County; Indiana & Ohio Railway will upgrade a crossing in Jefferson Township; and the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co. (W&LE) will upgrade three crossings in Greene Township and Sharon Township.

The railroads will be responsible for completing construction by May 1, 2013. Funding for the projects will be covered by federal dollars.

In addition, W&LE will upgrade a crossing in Twinsburg that will be jointly funded by PUCO, the city and railroad. Work must be completed by Aug. 1, 2013.

On July 18, PUCO also announced it approved construction authorization from the rail commission directing NS and CSX Transportation to install flashing lights and gates at two crossings. NS will upgrade a crossing in Scioto County and CSXT will upgrade a crossing in Logan County.

The railroads must complete construction by April 18, 2013. Funding will be covered by federal dollars.
