Rail Runner places event recorders on trains

This week, New Mexico’s Rail Runner Express is installing new monitoring systems onboard trains.
Featuring a wireless processing unit and Railhead digital video recorder, the system generates a single, downloadable file that contains event recorder data. The system will enable Rail Runner officials to monitor train operations, and motorists’ and pedestrians’ behavior near tracks and crossings.
“This technology will allow us to go back and recreate a situation so that we can know for sure exactly what happened on one of our trains,” said New Mexico Secretary of Transportation Rhonda Faught in a prepared statement.
