Rep. Higgins calls on FRA to investigate New York crossing 'malfunctions'

U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins (D-N.Y.) recently sent a letter to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requesting that the agency investigate “repeated problems” at a CSX Transportation grade crossing in Dunkirk, N.Y.
According to constituents in the area, the crossing experiences “functioning abnormalities,” such as gates lowering even though no train is approaching and gates raising while trains move through the crossing, Higgins wrote in the letter.
“Malfunctions with the mechanical equipment intended to make the crossing safer are actually leading to dangerous uncertainty for those who cross these tracks,” said Higgins in a prepared statement. “We’re taking the data to the FRA and asking for a thorough review and resolution to protect those who live and travel in the area.”
Higgins also forwarded to the FRA a video of equipment malfunctions, which was recorded by a local resident whose son was one of three people killed in an accident at the crossing that occurred in October 2009.
