• General Electric Co. has named Lorenzo Simonelli president and chief executive officer of GE - Transportation to succeed John Dineen, who will become president and CEO of GE Healthcare. Simonelli most recently was president and CEO of Europe, the Middle East and Africa for GE Consumer & Industrial. He previously headed the division's global product management team, and served as chief financial officer for GE Consumer & Industrial - Americas and global financial planning and accounting manager for GE Consumer Products.

• A HLS Systems International Ltd./Ansaldo STS consortium won a $97 million contract from China's Ministry of Railways to design, construct and maintain a control system for a 285-mile high-speed rail line between Zhengzhou and Xi'an. When the line is completed at 2009's end, trains will operate at speeds up to 186 mph.

• A Bombardier Transportation/Talgo consortium obtained a 14-year contract from Spanish national rail operator RENFE to maintain 45 AVE S-130 high-speed trains. The companies will maintain the trains at RENFE's Madrid shops. The AVE S-130 trains can reach speeds up to 155 mph and are equipped with dual-voltage propulsion and onboard signaling systems, and variable-gauge trucks.

• A Dimetronic Signals/Thales consortium won a contract from Spanish railway administrator ADIF to provide signaling and communications for the high-speed Madrid-to-Valencia line. The signaling system will feature electronic interlockings, track circuits, an ERTMS Level 1 & 2 train-protection system and traffic-control center. The contract also calls for fixed telecommunications, auxiliary detectors, power supply, building construction and maintenance support for three years. Part of the Invensys Rail Group, Dimetronic will lead the consortium and be responsible for supplying, installing, testing and commissioning the ERTMS system and traffic-control center.

• Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. obtained contracts totaling $68 million from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority to enhance an automated universal fare-collection/smart card system. Under the first 10-year contract, a $46 million lease agreement, the company will deliver more than 420 fare gates and upgrade ticket vending machines to distribute limited-use smart cards to all subway and selected light-rail stations.

• Kelso Technologies Inc. has delivered 12 stainless-steel, low-flow pressure-relief valves to Texana Tank Car & Manufacturing Ltd., which will install the valves on tank cars to be delivered in the third quarter to a major U.S. chemical producer. Kelso provided valves featuring the latest design for 165 psi-rated tank cars.
