• Savage Services Corp. has entered into definitive agreements to acquire the assets and locomotive and rail services business of Quality Rail Services L.L.C. (QRS). The transaction is expected to close tomorrow. QRS provides locomotive fueling, mechanical and other services to Class Is. Savage provides various services to Class Is. In addition, through its subsidiary CANAC Railway Services Inc., the company provides engineering, planning, design, rehabilitation and training services to the rail industry.
• Bombardier Transportation obtained a $66 million order from Germany’s Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen GmbH (LNVG) to build 34 additional double-deck coaches. LNVG currently uses 186 of Bombardier’s double-deck coaches. All of the vehicles will be manufactured at Bombardier’s Görlitz plant.
• Alstom Transport won a $13.3 million contract from Chilean operator Metro de Santiago to supply an automatic train-control system for a metro line 5 extension. The nine-mile extension will enter service in December 2009. The train-control system will enable Metro de Santiago to reduce intervals between trains.
• Effective Dec. 23, Colorado Railcar Manufacturing ceased operations. The company has a “major liquidity problem” and its lenders have a “secured position in the firm’s assets,” according to a statement posted on Colorado Railcar’s Web site. The company is in the process of liquidation and, as of tomorrow, will have no employees.
• Professional Transportation Inc. (PTI) has promoted Steve McClellan from director of operations to vice president, effective Jan. 1. Founded in 1980, PTI provides ground transportation services for railroad employees.
