• Siemens Mobility received an order from the Lithuanian Railways for 10 Class ER20 CF freight locomotives. The contract includes testing and maintenance part services. Siemens will deliver two locomotives monthly between May and September 2010. In 2005, the railway ordered 34 six-axle diesel-electric locomotives and retained an option for 10 additional units. Siemens has built 20 of the units at its Munich, Germany, plant and delivered the locomotives.

• Ansaldo STS subsidiary Ansaldo STS France won a contract from Reseau Ferré de France to supply a wayside signaling system for the new Rhine-Rhone high-speed line’s eastern branch. Ansaldo STS France will provide design, data configuration, equipment installation and testing services, and provide track circuits and hot-box detectors. To be completed by 2011’s end, the first section of the line will run from Villers Les Pots to Petit Croix and feature two main stations.

• Ansaldo STS - Union Switch & Signal (US&S) has promoted Mark Cirucci from project director to vice president of customer operations. He will be responsible for all aspects of account and project management, and engineering functions, including component and systems sales, and project and engineering delivery. Cirucci has 24 years’ experience in project and engineering management. For Ansaldo STS – US&S, he previously managed the Copenhagen driverless system project in Denmark, which led to contracts for additional driverless systems in Brescia, Rome, Milan and Thessalonica, Greece.

• Granite Construction Inc. subsidiary Granite Construction Northeast Inc. won a $161 million contract from the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority to rehabilitate five MTA New York City Transit stations. To be completed in 38 months, the project calls for reconstructing platform areas, rehabilitating and rebuilding stairs and control areas, and renovating drainage and lighting systems.

• Ethanol distributor U.S. Development Group L.L.C. recently began receiving and offloading ethanol unit trains operated by CSX Transportation at a Baltimore transload terminal. The 18-acre multi-modal ethanol distribution hub receives inbound rail and ship/barge shipments, and arranges outbound truck and pipeline moves. The terminal, which can accommodate 100-car unit trains and store 12 million gallons of ethanol, features a 150-car-capacity yard and 20-spot rail car offloading facility.

• Portec Rail Products Inc. reported record unaudited third-quarter net income of $2.5 million, up 33 percent compared with third-quarter 2007’s total. Net sales increased 6 percent to $29.6 million. During 2008’s first nine months, the supplier’s net income jumped 26 percent to $6.3 million while net sales were flat at $84.7 million vs. totals from the same 207 period.

• ARCADIS has appointed Jamshid Jahangiri as Texas transportation operations manager for the engineering firm's Infrastructure Division. He will be responsible for all aspects of transportation projects in Texas, including light and commuter rail, highways and bridges. Jahangiri has more than 28 years’ experience in managing transportation projects in the state for such clients as Dallas Area Rapid Transit and the Denton County Transit Authority. He most recently was transportation manager for the Dallas/Fort Worth area for Kellogg Brown & Root Services Inc.

• Visa Inc. is working with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority to provide a payWave system that would enable train, subway and bus riders to use a contactless card to pay fares. In addition, Visa Europe1 is collaborating with the Paris transit operator Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens to demonstrate the payWave system at fare gates. A small chip embedded in the payment cards can communicate with contactless card readers and accept payment.
