Wabtec Railway Electronics to install ETMS on Metra locomotives, cars

The Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra) recently contracted Wabtec Corp. subsidiary Wabtec Railway Electronics to install its Electronic Train Management System (ETMS®) on 24 locomotives and 24 passengers cars that operate on the Rock Island line.

ETMS monitors and processes movement-related information — such as authority limits, speed limits, signal aspects and work zones — through a digital communications network and on-board computer that displays location information provided by a Global Positioning System. ETMS will automatically initiate braking if an engineer fails to respond to movement and speed limit requirements.

Wabtec Railway Electronics will begin installing the system in early 2007; ETMS-equipped rolling stock will enter revenue service in 2008.
