Washington state regulators recently announced they've approved more than $72,000 in grant funding for safety upgrades at nine public grade crossings in southwest Yakima County and $104,500 in grant funding to enhance safety at crossings in Walla Walla County.
The Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) approved nine Grade Crossing Protective Fund grants to replace aging crossing signal batteries and battery chargers in Yakima County between Toppenish and White Swan. Affected crossings are located at State Route 97, Wesley Road, South Wapato Road, Signal Peak Road, Curtis Street, West White Swan Road, Barkes Road, Brownstown Road and Lateral A Road.
The new crossing signal batteries and battery chargers will improve the signals' reliability, UTC officials said in a news release. Affected crossings in Walla Walla County, Walla Walla and College Place are located at Last Chance Road and Prospect Road in Walla Walla County; Myra Road, Poplar Street, Rose Street and Tietan Street in Walla Walla; and Wallula Avenue in College Place.
The new train detection equipment will improve the serviceability and reliability of the crossing system, UTC officials said.
