Washington transportation commission helps fund crossing surface work

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) recently approved allocating about $8,700 from the Grade Crossing Protective Fund (GCPF) to Washington & Idaho Railway Inc. to upgrade a crossing surface in Pullman. The railroad and city of Pullman will cover the project’s labor costs.

The short line will replace 10 damaged crossing panels at the crossing, which is used by about 26,000 vehicles daily. After the work is completed in April, motorists no longer will have to slow down to negotiate the crossing, UTC officials said in a prepared statement.


Established in 1969 and administered by the UTC, the GCPF provides funds for safety measures designed to decrease the potential for accidents and fatalities at public and private crossings, and along tracks statewide.
