On Friday, CN announced it has revitalized a company-wide employee training program to better meet the learning needs of its current and future workers. The initiative calls for building two modern training centers in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Homewood, Ill.

CN broke ground on the Winnipeg facility during a ceremony held at its Transcona heavy repair shops on Friday. The Class I expects construction to begin next year on a similar facility adjacent to its Woodcrest Mechanical Shop in Homewood.

Each week, the 100,000-square-foot Winnipeg facility will host 250 to 300 trainees, while the 75,000-square-foot Homewood center will accommodate 100 to 125 trainees. The facilities will provide state-of-the-art training to new hires and existing workers in positions ranging from conductor to locomotive mechanic to track supervisor to signal maintainer, CN officials said in a prepared statement.

Training will include hands-on exercises in indoor learning laboratories with such equipment as locomotive simulators and dispatcher stations, and courses at outdoor labs with dedicated rolling stock and other field training equipment. The training programs will have a uniform curriculum, with dedicated local staff at each location, CN officials said.

"These facilities will be the centerpiece of CN's enhanced railroader training program," said CN President and Chief Executive Officer Claude Mongeau. "We hope this training program and these centers will ultimately become a benchmark for the railroad industry."
